What is the Department of State (DOS?)

The Department of State (DOS) plays the lead role in developing and implementing the President’s foreign policy. Major responsibilities include United States representation abroad, foreign assistance, foreign military training programs, countering international crime, and a wide assortment of services to U.S. citizens and foreign nationals seeking entrance to the United States. The U.S. maintains diplomatic relations with approximately 180 countries — each posted by civilian U.S. Foreign Service employees — as well as with international organizations.

Bureau of Global Health Security and Diplomacy Leads and coordinates the Department’s work on strengthening global health security to prevent, detect, and respond to infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS.

Bureau of Intelligence and Research The mission is to communicate objective intelligence that will advance U.S. Diplomacy to ensure peace and prosperity.

Bureau of Legislative Affairs Coordinates all legislative activity for the DOS and serves as the departments connection to Congress and advices the Secretary.

Counselor of the Department Serves under the Secretary as a special advisor and consultant. The Counselor also conducts special international negotiations and consultations.

Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Leads and partners with an inclusive coalition of government and private sector organizations to secure the freedom of U.S. national hostages and wrongful detainees held abroad, support their families, and end the practice of hostage diplomacy.

Office of U.S. Special Coordinator for the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI) Leads and coordinates the advancement of strategic infrastructure and and investment in low-income countries. 

Office of the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate Is charged with leading U.S. diplomacy to address the climate crisis. 

Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security

Homepage Leads the interagency policy process on nonproliferation and manages global U.S. security in the areas of arms control, regional security and defense relations. 

Bureau of Arms Control, Deterrence, and Stability (ADS) Is responsible for diplomatic efforts to increase stability, reduce the risk of unintentional escalation, and prevent conflict.

Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN) Prevents and rolls back the spread of WMD, protects U.S. technology and promotes peaceful uses of nuclear energy, science, and technology.

Bureau of the Political-Military Affairs (PM) Is the Department of State's principal link to the Department of Defense. The PM Bureau provides policy direction in the areas of international security, security assistance, military operations, defense strategy and plans, and defense trade.

Office of the Chief Economist (OCE) The mission has three parts: strategic advice, capacity building, and outreach. 

Office of the Science and Technology Advisor (STI) The mission is to anticipate the foreign policy impacts of scientific research, discoveries, development, and innovations.

Subnational Diplomacy Unit Aims to bring the benefits of U.S. foreign policy, such as jobs, investments, innovative solutions, and international experiences, to the local and state level.

Bureau of Administration Provides support programs to the DOS and U.S. embassies and consulates.

Bureau of Global Talent Management Leads the recruitment, assignment, and career development processes to build an engaged and effective workforce.

Bureau of Medical Services The mission is to promote and safeguard the health and well-being of America's diplomatic community and to facilitate the diplomatic efforts of the DOS.

Bureau of Overseas Building Operations (OBO) The mission is to provide the most effective facilities for United States diplomacy abroad.

Bureau of the Comptroller and Global financial Services The mission is to provide an accountable, efficient and transparent financial management platform that furthers the U.S. government’s and DOS global foreign affairs mission.

Office of Foreign Missions (OFM) Has four missions: employment of reciprocity, regulation of the activities of foreign missions, protection of the U.S. public from abuses of privileges and immunities by members of the foreign missions, and  provision of service and assistance to the foreign mission community in the U.S.

Office of Management Strategy and Solutions (M/SS) Catalyzes strategic insights and solutions to help improve the management platform and advance foreign policy goals.

Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs Develops and implements U.S. foreign policy in Europe and Eurasia.

Bureau of International Organization Affairs Develops and implements U.S. policy at the United Nations and in a wide range of other multilateral organizations.

Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs Leads U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East and North Africa region through carefully administered diplomacy, advocacy, and assistance that advances the interests, safety, and economic prosperity of the American people.

Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Through diplomacy, advocacy, assistance, and learning from the past this department advances the interests of the American people, their safety and economic prosperity.

Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs Is dedicated to helping keep Americans safe and increasing our economic prosperity.

Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs

Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) Designs and implements educational, professional, and cultural exchange and other programs that create and sustain the mutual understanding with other countries necessary to advancing United States foreign policy goals.

Bureau of Global Public Affairs (GPA) The mission is to serve the American people by effectively communicating U.S. foreign policy priorities and the importance of diplomacy to American audiences. 

Global Engagement Center The mission is to  direct, lead, synchronize, integrate, and coordinate U.S. Federal Government efforts to recognize, understand, expose, and counter foreign state and non-state propaganda and disinformation efforts aimed at undermining or influencing the policies, security, or stability of the United States, its allies, and partner nations.

Office of Global Youth Issues Serves as principal public representative on youth issues.

Office of Policy, Planning, and Resources (R/PPR) Provides long-term strategic planning and performance measurement capability for public diplomacy and public affairs programs.
