My friend said there are two ways to get a PhD. The easy way is to find a professor and say, "I want to research whatever you are researching." The hard way is to choose a topic that interests you and then try to find a committee that will support that topic. The second is hard only if your topic is more obscure or if you have difficulty finding committee members or in getting support for your research.
