Crim 396: Research Methods in Criminal Justice: Start Here

ISU Writing Center

If you meet with a consultant at the ISU Writing Center, the consultant will work with you to solve any writing problems or concerns.  Bring your assignment, and any relevant materials to the meeting.

Plagiarism and Citing

Purdue Online Writing Lab (OWL) provides an overview of citing different sources in APA format.  If you need assistance with citing sources, consult the APA handbook (available in the library), the ISU Writing Center, or a librarian.

This library guide provides information and resources for Crim 396: Research Methods in Criminal Justice.  Use the TABS at the top of the site to click on information about a particular topic.  Selected resources are shown on this library guide; there are additional resources available in the library and on the web. Remember, the guide was created as a tool to assist in your research; you are responsible for locating additional resources on your topic.

This page provides information (ISU Writing Center, evaluating and citing sources, inter-library loan), to consider as you plan your research.

If you would like to meet with the School of Criminology and Security Studies Librarian, e-mail her (look to the right).

Evaluating Resources

Although no criteria or standards exist for placing something on the web, criteria does exist for evaluating what is on the web. You should always review web resources before making a decision to use them as a source for an assignment.  Below are links describing benchmarks for evaluating web resources.

InterLibrary Loan

Use Inter-Library Loan (ILL) to obtain materials ISU does not own.  ILL is a free service and can be used to request materials for academic work.  You must be affiliated with ISU to use the service.  If you need to use ILL, PLAN AHEAD.  It takes time to locate and obtain the materials from other libraries.

Endnote is a software tool to assist you in managing bibliographies and citations.  It is important to keep a record of sources found during your research.  Keeping accurate records of resources can make the research process easier.  Endnote is free for ISU faculty, staff, and students.
