Special Collections: Department of Special Collections

Welcome to the Department of Special Collections on the 3rd floor of Cunningham Memorial Library.

About this page

On this page, you can find information about the kinds of work we do in the Department of Special Collections and how to access material from the University Archives, Rare Books & Manuscripts, and Permanent Art Collection. We hope you will visit us in person or let us help you find what you need online!

Catalog search

You can find items from Rare Books & Manuscripts in the Library's Classic Catalog when you use the location limiter "Special Collections" in the drop-down menu. The University Archives can be searched <here>, and the Permanent Art Collection has its own <web kiosk found here>.

If you have any trouble finding what you need in our collections, please don't hesitate to contact us in person or online! We look forward to your questions.

What we do

Dennis Vetrovec choosing an item from the stacks.

In this department of the library, we maintain the access to and preservation of rare materials. These materials range from early printed books to vintage cheerleader uniforms and outdoor sculptures. We provide quality instruction through lectures, publications, and research consultations to the university and local community.

We also work behind the scenes to organize, protect, and add to the collections available to our patrons (that's you!).

Looking to get involved?

We regularly post student jobs and graduate assistant positions on the Indiana State Employment Opportunities here. Check back every semester for new opportunities.

Some of the things our students are assisting us to do:

  • Processing archival collections
  • Cataloging rare books
  • Shelf maintenance and preservation
  • Graphic design and art photography
