In practice, it acts as a one stop center which centralizes and integrates the data coming from various sources and allows to harmonize it according to international standards while ensuring data quality and reliability.

The 55th edition contains data available to the Statistics Division as of 31 December 2011 and presents them in 60 tables on topics such as: agriculture, forestry and fishing; communication; development assistance; education; energy; environment; finance; gender; international merchandise trade; international tourism; labour force; manufacturing; national accounts; population; prices; and science and technology. The number of years of data shown in the tables varies from one to ten, with most tables covering the period up to 2009 or 2010.

Once you have used other sources to establish main crops, food, etc., use this to identify specific stats by type of commodity and then your country. 2008 is most current edition.

The Yearbook contains data on production of industrial commodities by country and geographical region. The statistics refer to the ten-year period 1999-2008 for about 200 countries and areas, based on a list of about 600 commodities. Additional data, i.e. for periods before 1999 as well as additional commodities, are available in the Industrial Commodity Statistics Database (not free, not online).
