Researching science for a specific region of the world requires searches for publications specific to that region. Realize that publications on the Midwest or even the eastern United States may be suitable, depending on your topic. If you are researching a species that lives in Indiana, realize that species live within appropriate ecosystems, not within manmade political boundaries. Soils and rocks are affected by time, weather, and water and may cover huge areas or be limited to relatively small fields. So consider what is appropriate for your search. Ask your professor or librarian if you are unsure and need help.
If specific regional publications cannot be found, then the researcher may need to broaden his search to more general publications and then interpret the knowledge back to his more specific topic. This is not as valid as precise research studies but it can allow decisions to be made and identify further studies needed.
