This page is a selective guide to assist Music students with locating initial resources

LC classification

The Library of Congress [LC] Classification system is a system of letters and numbers assigned to a book based upon its topic. Books in university libraries are shelved according to the LC call number. This results in books on similar topics being shelved near each other on the shelves.

LC is used by Indiana State University Libraries for assigning call numbers to the bulk of its collections.  The following are the classification Letters for Music:

M  Music

ML Literature of music

MT Music instruction & study

Videorecordings at Cunningham Library can be located both in the library stacks and from the Library's Browsing Collection.  If located in the stacks, videorecordings will be organized by the Library of Congress Call Numbers.  If a music title is located in the Browsing Collection, it will be organized alphabetically by title under the genre: Music and Opera.   This includes all music performance and music documentaries.
