What is the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)?

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is responsible for administering benefit programs for veterans, their families, and their survivors. In addition to their primary mission, VA carries out four specific missions to make good on their commitment to Veterans and other beneficiaries. These four other missions include: Veterans Health Care, Veterans Benefits, National Cemeteries and the Fourth Mission is to improve the Nation's preparedness for response to war, terrorism,, national emergencies, and natural disasters.

Mental Health VA has a variety of mental health resources, information, treatment options and more, all accessible to Veterans, Veterans’ supporters and the general public. 

VA Education and Training Benefits Help Veterans, service members, and their qualified family members with needs like paying college tuition, finding the right school or training program, and getting career counseling.

VA Homeless Programs Office (HPO) The Mission is to assist Veterans and their families in obtaining permanent and sustainable housing with access to high-quality health care and supportive services.

VA Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) Develops and provides comprehensive evidenced based nutritional services for our Veterans and their families. 

VA Outreach Materials Use outreach materials to help Veterans manage their journey with VA and learn about their benefits.

Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP)The VA is charged with providing health care and benefits to support Veterans and members of their families. This Vulnerability Disclosure Policy (VDP) is meant to address some of the possible apprehensions and explain what research would be authorized under this VDP. 

VA Innovation

Health Research The mission is to improve Veterans' health and well being, apply scientific knowledge to create effective care for Veterans. This Office of Research and Development focusses on health issues that affect Veterans.

Public Health The VHA brings a public health approach to protecting the health of Veterans.

VA Innovation Center Is developing new ways to use innovative technologies in VA health.

VA Open Data This is an initiative that seeks to advance government transparency and promote innovation by making data accessible to the public.

Veterans Analysis and Statistics Develops statistical analyses and reports on a broad range of topics, operate VA’s data and statistics Web portal to disseminate Veteran data and statistics, and develop estimates and projections on Veteran populations.

VA Organizations

Congressional and Legislative Affairs Is the liaison on all interaction with the Members of Congress.

National Cemetery Administration (NCA) Honors eligible Veterans, active-duty Service Members and eligible family members with final resting places in national shrines and with lasting tributes that commemorate their service and sacrifice to our Nation.

Office Public and Intergovernmental Affairs (OPIA) Develops, maintains, and communicates the VA's message through media relations and public, intergovernmental, and Veteran engagement to empower Veterans and their families. 

Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) Provides a variety of benefits and services to Service members, Veterans, and their families. 

Veterans Health Administration (VHA) The mission is to honor America’s Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being.
