What is the Department of the Treasury?

The mission of the Department of the Treasury, or Treasury Department, is to maintain a strong economy and create economic and job opportunities by promoting the conditions that enable economic growth and stability at home and abroad, strengthen national security by combating threats and protecting the integrity of the financial system, and manage the U.S. Government’s finances and resources effectively.

Treasury Department Bureaus

Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) This bureau is responsible for enforcing the laws regulating alcohol production, importation, and wholesale businesses; tobacco manufacturing and importing businesses; and alcohol labeling and advertising.

Bureau of Engraving & Printing (BEP) The mission is to develop and produce United States currency notes, trusted worldwide. 

Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) The mission is to safeguard the financial system from illicit use, combat money laundering and its related crimes including terrorism, and promote national security through the strategic use of financial authorities and the collection, analysis, and dissemination of financial intelligence.

Bureau of Fiscal Service (BFS) The mission is to promote the financial integrity and operational efficiency of the federal government through exceptional accounting, financing, collections, payments, and shared services.

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) The mission is to provide America's taxpayers top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities and to enforce the law with integrity and fairness to all.

Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) charters, regulates, and supervises all national banks, federal savings associations, and federal branches and agencies of foreign banks.

U.S. Mint The mission is to serve the American people by manufacturing and distributing circulating, precious metal and collectible coins and national medals, and providing security over assets entrusted to us.

Office of Inspector General (OIG) The Inspector General is required to keep both the Secretary and the Congress fully and currently informed about the problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of department programs and operations and the necessity for corrective action.

Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) The mission is to provide quality, professional audit, investigative, and inspection and evaluation services that promote integrity, economy, and efficiency in the administration of the nation’s tax system.

Special Inspector General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (SIGTARP) The mission is to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse.

Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery (SIGPR) The mission is to safeguard the people’s tax dollars appropriated by Congress through the CARES Act.

Treasury Department Offices

Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility (DEIA)

Domestic Finance Works to support equitable and sustainable economic growth and financial stability through policies to increase the resilience of financial institutions and markets, and to increase access to credit for small businesses and low-to-moderate income communities. 

Economic Policy Is responsible for analyzing and reporting on current and prospective economic developments in the U.S. and world economies and assisting in the determination of appropriate economic policies.

General Counsel Provides legal and policy advice to the Secretary and other senior Departmental officials. 

Inspectors General Conducts independent audits, investigations and reviews to help the Treasury Department accomplish its mission; improve its programs and operations; promote economy, efficiency and effectiveness; and prevent and detect fraud and abuse.

International Affairs Protects and supports U.S. economic prosperity by strengthening the external environment for U.S. growth, preventing and mitigating global financial instability, and managing key global challenges.

Management Is responsible for the internal management and policy of the Department in the areas of budget, planning, human resources, information and technology management, financial management and accounting, procurement, privacy, records, and administrative services to Departmental Offices. 

Public Affairs Develops and implements communications strategy for the Department and advises officials within the Department and its bureaus how best to communicate issues and priorities of public interest.

Tax Policy Develops and implements tax policies and programs.

Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Develops and implements U.S. government strategies to combat terrorist financing domestically and internationally, and develops and implements the National Money Laundering Strategy as well as other policies and programs to fight financial crimes.
